American Heart Month

American Heart Month: Small Steps for Big Change

Every February, we observe American Heart Month, a nationwide effort to raise awareness about heart health and encourage heart-healthy living. At the Fulton County YMCA, we believe that a healthy heart is at the center of healthy lives, families, and communities — and we’re proud to support our members and neighbors as they take positive steps toward stronger hearts.

Why American Heart Month Matters

Heart disease remains a leading cause of death in the United States, impacting millions of families every year. According to the American Heart Association (AHA), lifestyle choices such as regular physical activity, balanced nutrition, stress management, and social connection can significantly reduce cardiovascular risk. American Heart Month is a reminder that even small, sustainable habits — like daily movement or heart-smart meals — add up to powerful, long-term benefits.

The YMCA & Heart Health

The YMCA has a long history of promoting cardiovascular wellness through responsive programming, community support, and inclusive opportunities for all ages and abilities. The Y’s mission is to strengthen the foundation of community by building connections and fostering health — and that includes heart health. Whether through group exercise, strength training, aquatic programs, or wellness coaching, the Y provides accessible ways to stay active, engaged, and supported on your health journey.

At the Fulton County YMCA, we champion the AHA’s message that making small changes — like increasing daily steps, choosing nutrient-rich foods, or participating in group activities — can help protect your heart and improve your overall well-being.

Small Steps to a Healthy Heart

During American Heart Month and beyond, consider these heart-healthy habits recommended by health experts:

  • Move More Every Day – Aim for 30 minutes of moderate physical activity most days of the week. This can include walking, swimming, yoga, cycling, or fitness classes at the Y.

  • Choose Heart-Smart Foods – Incorporate vegetables, fruits, whole grains, lean proteins, nuts, and seeds into your meals. Reduce sodium and highly processed foods when possible.

  • Stay Connected – Social well-being supports emotional resilience. Group classes, community events, and Y programs help cultivate meaningful connections.

  • Manage Stress – Mindful breathing, meditation, adequate rest, and balanced routines all support heart health.

  • Know Your Numbers – Regular check-ups with your healthcare provider, including blood pressure and cholesterol screenings, help you stay informed and in control.

Celebrate With Us This February

Throughout February, we encourage members and the community to take part in opportunities that promote heart health. Whether it’s trying one of our group classes, walking with friends, or setting a personal wellness goal, the Fulton County YMCA is here to support you every step of the way!

American Heart Month is a powerful reminder that healthy habits don’t need to be big or extreme — they simply need to be consistent.

Let’s move together, eat smart, live well, and build heart-healthy lifestyles that last a lifetime.
